Do I have a serious problem? Please help

I have a 4.3 Mercruiser I/O and the gear lube "monitor" loses about 20cc's of fluid from it every time I use it. The other day I had it out for hours and was at full throttle for about 20 minutes when I heard a loud banging sound from the stern and the boat would lose forward momentum for just a second after every bang. When I brought the throttle back it would stop. I noticed that the gear lube was leaking all over the place from underneath the reservoir bottle from the connection at the bottom of it. It leaked all over the belt and was making a huge mess. Could this be related to the noise? Is there anything I can do about the leaking from the bottle or do I just let it be? I took it out yesterday and used it all day and it didn't have an issue (didn't run it at full speed for more than a few minutes but kept it at 4000 rpm's to try and recreate the problem). It a 2000 tahoe 190 hp Q5.

Any guess as to what kind of drive problem? Is there any place online that I can see how the drive system works? Any help is appreciated.

Re: Gear Lube leaking from bottom of reservoir

If I use it without pushing it for too long the fluid just fills up in the drive lube monitor and then goes back down after I stop. I went tubing etc. yesterday with no issues. There's no lag time in the running of the boat and no other issues. The drive was pulled three weeks ago by a professional and he showed me all the parts. They were clean with no sign of water or excessive wear. I was having this issue before he pulled it so I don't think it's from him. It was also pressure tested with no leaks at 15psi (I think that was the psi). Again it seems to be working fine right now but if anyone has an "eureka!" moment that had a similiar or same problem then that would be awesome.

Thanks.

My guess is, your reservoir bottle leaks, and when you were running at WOT for 20 mins or so, your engine had a little backfire and that was what you heard and felt. The boat would jerk a bit during a backfire. I am only guessing from your description.

Thank you. Hopefully you're right. I have noticed that sometimes it keeps trying to run after I shut it off for a couple seconds. Kind of like an old car that sputters after shutting off. Also there are no metal shards and there isn't any water in the res. Thanks everyone!

Ayuh,.... That's called Run-on, or Dieselin'....

It's Very serious,+ should be dealt with before it happens again..
The motor can/ does run backwards for the last couple seconds,+ ingests Water into the cylinders, causing Hydro-lock...

Maybe a complete Tune Up,+ service will cure it, or point out Why it's doin' it...
