1970 jhonson 85hp

i have a 1970 85hp jhonson and the coil has some cracks and im not getting any fire my friend said i could use a car coil if so wich one i know alot about cars motor but nothing about boat motors has new power pack getting fire in pack but nothing out to the points i dont know the right gap so please help

well if your coil is cracked, spend the $30 bucks or so and replace it.

well i would but it seems like it is built in with the stater i guess thats what it is it connets to the sparks plugs again this is my frist baot and my frist time on here

yes i have one coil and the coil is attached to the stater which goes to the plugsim going to try just to buy only the coil but i dont known if it is all one piece

I believe you have an amplifier which goes to you coil which goes to your distributor under the flywheel correct?

yes thats right i bought a coil and trying to splice the new coil in does anyone know the gap for the points and are they the same

You buy the coil, it comes with a wire to the cap- you first unbolt the coil
then unscrew the wire from the distributor cap by spinning the coil. Hope that makes sense.
