petition to destroy all old 9.5 johnsons!!

Speaking tounge and cheek of course, but over the weekend my buddy bought a real nice looking 64 johnson 9.5 before consulting me. Sure enough has the exhaust leak under the hood issue, and even after doing a complete carb rebuild, and points cleaning, coil replacing day, the darn thig runs just like the other 2 i have personally owned..Like crap.
My solution you ask? I didn't want to dig in and replace the seals, so..I drilled 4 small holes in the cowling, and mounted a small battery operated fan venting out. Seems to help some, but i am urging him to sell it for a good old 5.5 or 6 hp. Fine for now, but im sure he will get tired of the poor performance soon enough. Thanks for reading my rant!

I'd run it without the hood on............ain't like those 9.5's are a thing of beauty anyway.....

If you go through the hassle and change out that seal, you'll actually be glad that you own that motor, especially after all the other work you've done on it. I did a couple of them in one day, so it isn't too bad. It's also a good opportune time to clean it all up and make it look like new inside.

alas..i know, i know.. But why cant they just fire up and run perfectly after sitting for 30 years like all the 5.5 and 6 hp johnsons i have had?.. Seriously, if you do a search on 9.5 's and problems.. even on here, they have lot's of issues. I have had 2 in the past, both came with old tin boat purchase, and i am notoriously impatient about completing projects. I have ordered parts here from iboats, but 9 times out of 10 if i can't put my hands on a part quickly, i feel obsessed until it gets done. can't buy those seals at Napa..

4 x 3/8 holes boobie. I guess they are hit or miss, but like alot of our members here, i have owned and fixed quite a few motors. I love the old johnsons, and rudes..even alll the fun i have had replacing impellers (and head bolts) in the 56-57 7.5's and similar, but i get a headache whenever i see one of those old 9.5's coming. Everything from the upright pull start recoil spring breakage.. (try and find that spring for under 50 bucks) , to the tough to get at carb, to the exhaust issues. I know they called em the fisherman's friend, but..and this is just one man's opinion, they should have kept the older design, and then skipped this one completely..Gone right to the 9.9. Not that im bitter or anything..

Years ago when this would happen to me I would get out the old hole saw. Of course with customers approval. I'd then drill two 3/4" holes in the very front of the mtr cowl on the down slope and two 1" holes on the back down slope. I put these holes fairly close to the sides of the cowling. Customer was always very happy as it saved him some bucks and he didn't care if it looked like sh#%T. The mtrs ran great after that .There's still a number of those mtrs running around northern WI. The 9.5 mtr was a pretty good mtr once you understood how to work on it.
