As the title says. I have a 1988 Sea Arrow with a 5.7 Merc and a Alpha One out drive. How do you tell weather its Gen I or Gen II?

I'm running into a bit of a overheating issue and am going to replace the impeller and the thermostat. It wants to overheat at idle speeds, i can cruise all day long at plane and the temp is fine, but once i have to go threw a no wake zone i notice the temp rising into the "red". So i shut it off. If i notice it rising and take off before it get into the red it drops back down to normal. I just bought this boat this year, so i dont know the last time the impeller has been changed out, so ill start there, just need to make sure i get the right parts.

Thanks in advance.

Re: How to tell a Gen I or Gen II

Okay, I am the 4th owner of this boat. The previous owner said that there has been an engine swap within its lifetime. From the factory paperwork it had a 305 Merc. Now its got the 350 Merc. Doubtful but possible the out drive could have been change out in its life time also. So with out basing it solely on the year of the boat how can i tell weather its a Gen I or Gen II, so i can order the correct parts?

Thank You

The serial #s are what parts are ordered by,...

Easiest way I know is the Gen.II has SSteel nuts, Exposed alongside, just above the cav-plate....
It also has 2 extra thru-hull studs at the top of the transom assembley....

The Adults Only section at the top of this forum is L O A D E D with Great Info,+ the factory manuals,....
Have a look around.....;)
