Oil is getting higher.....

So I changed the oil before the season started and I KNOW I put the correct amount in. I don't recall how much, but I specifically remember adding the correct amount(as per the manual). I checked the oil the other day, and it seems way over full. It seems to be about 1 quart over. The oil is NOT MILKY. The oil still looks clean and all is well. It runs fine, and I firmly believe water isn't getting into the oil because the oil is clean, and due to having raw water cooling, I would see oil coming out the back of the boat while idleing.
Opinions?

Maybe you didn't drain the old oil all the way out or you aren't level.

The owner's manual is just a guideline...the dipstick is the final word on when you have added the right amount during an oil change.

If you are not more than 1/4 quart overfilled, I would think that you are OK.

Happy boating!

You either didn't drain out ALL the old oil or you didn't change the filter but added enough as though you did.

does it have a gas odor?
no

Thats my current line of thinking as well....

Roger that

It is more than that...

Either change the oil or pump it down to the 'full' line and go from there. If you have a vacuum pump for changing oil, it shouldnt take more than 30 seconds to pull it down to full. Takes all of 2 minutes to suck out 5 quarts cold with our Moeller unit.

You say it's not "milky", is that immediately after you've been running it? Or a few days after?

Water will separate and go to the bottom of the pan after a while, and the sample on the dipstick will appear normal, just high.

The filter holds just under a quart of oil...you could remove it, let it drain, put it back, and see where you are!

Happy boating!

Re: Oil is getting higher.....

when you initially filled it and checked with the dipstick, are you sure that the dipstick was pushed all the way in?

The dipstick has a hollow shroud that fits over the spigot on the engine black and its possible to have the shroud sitting on the spigot instead of being pushed over it withthe result that the dipstick sits 3/4inch higher.

If you then fill to the correct mark on the dipstick, you will have overfilled the sump.

If this is the case and it was only overfilled by a quart or so, drain the excess off and you should be fine. Overfilling is bad if its so full that the big ends dip into the oil and beat it into a froth but a bit a bit should be OK.

What would be the cause of getting gas in the crank case? I dont think thats happening here, but what would cause it other than flooding the hell out of it alot.

Gas will thin out the oil and destroy bearings..

If you had a mechanical fuel pump, which I don't think you do, a ruptured diaphragm would cause it.

I do have a mechanical fuel pump. The clear tube on the top of it is for if the pump fails I believe.

too much carb will dilute fuel, say like a 750 CFM verses a 600 CFM when the engine is only built to accept 600 CFM, if thats the case the boat would bellow black smoke ( raw fuel ) I would drain it to the full mark on the dip stick and run it and keep a close eye on it.

The boat is 100% original from the factory.
