1972 Merc 90 carb?

I don't seen any external problems with the carb but haven't opened it up. But judging from the plugs it's been running rich.

Am wondering if this is likely to have a metal or plastic foam float. Anybody know? Any differences from the usual automotive item? My experience with plastic floats in cars is that sometimes they soak up gas and partially sink....

Also, the choke stove tube seems intact, but I would consider replacing it with an electrically heated tst. Any sources/part numbers for this?

Thanks.

That is an outboard Alan, not an IO. I'll move this to the Mercury Outboard forum.

Alan, The original floats were foam. Ethenol tends to eat them. Replacement floats were hard plastic. These can crack.

Re: 1972 Merc 90 carb?

Thanks for the responses. I opened this up and found a nice brass float.

Also found a lot of solid crud in the float bowl. Seems like corrosion products from water sitting in it. I have a little concern that there could be enough corrosion to open a hole and leak gas. Anybody seen this happen?

Thanks.

This sounds like it should be moved back to the I/O forum.

Is this a 6-cylinder 3-carb outboard or a 4-cylinder single-carb I/O??
