merc stuck in drive....help...

i have a buddy with a 1978 65hp merc outboard ..he took it out and it got stuck in drive. he changed the cables and tried switching it by the linkage but it wont go into neutral...if anyone has any ideas on what it can be of what we can try to fix it ....thanks

check the rod that attaches the linkage to the to the shift acuator i once had one twist but didn't brake hope this helps

we will check that....any chance the shaft moved and needs to be re set ...i was reading somewhere you have to pull the lower unit and turn the shaft till it hots neutral amd then re assemble?
