a buddy of mine gave me a sea horse and im getting it going again(i hope). i cleaned the carb and sea foamed it to high heaven through the carb mounting hole and the plug holes. it ran 20 yrs ago when put in a garage. the carb was beyond jelled. just powder and rust. got it real clean. dropped the lower unit and checked the water pump and the impeller was in great shape. weird! i cant turn the prop for the life of me and i cant shift it! there was no fluid in the lower unit so i filled it up and let it sit a while but it still wont budge. i dont want to be too forcefull, or do i?????any ideas on freeing the lower unit up?! thanx a bunch

Sounds like there is some corrosion that is jamming things up. It doesn't take much rust to make things jam because the iron or aluminum eats oxygen and expands. I think you need to drop the lower unit and take it apart. You would just make things worse if you got it to free up and then ran it. I have a 1960 evinrude 10 horse and it that big of a deal.
Best of luck. I'll watch for your posts on where to get parts:)

You can try filling the lower unit with some type of penatrating oil and let it set for awhile.
If it is locked that tight, you will probably have to tear it down and inspect it for damaged componets.

looks easier to tear apart than newer lower units. is it? there are bolts at the widest part of the lower gear housing. do i split it in half or pull the prop and then everything else. the guy who gave it to me said i can use it but its his dads who left it in his garage in 1992 so technically i can borrow it cuz he didnt wanna say i can have it in case his 80 year old dad comes around saying, hey, wheres my old motor. i dont wanna sink too much in it even though he doesnt see his dad even remembering it. he said they used to duck hunt with it since the 60s but dad stopped hunting and the kids grew up and got their own duck boats.

Take the lower unit apart. There might be too much corrosion in there to save it or it might not be too bad but you need to take it apart to see. Drop the LU, take the 6 screws out and split the LU. Do it upside down or stuff will fall out.

btw, I have the parts diagram for the qd-17. if you PM me with your email address I can send it.
