My speedometer quit working today, I am not sure if it was the result of running into shallow water earlier. I didn't notice the Speedo probelm until later in the day - but I wasn't really looking either. I noticed the small intake on the lower unit and I am assuming that is the intake for the speedometer. it does not appear blocked I can push a toothpick in about an inch. Will flushing the engine with the garden hose connection help? I am temted to disconnect the hose and back blow it but I do not want to get carried away. Maybe I am barking up the wrong tree?

you have most likly plugged the spedo pitot or the tube with sand.dont blow air into the pitot or you may damage the speedo. always reverse flush the speedo line.

I use a piece of broom straw or other fine, but stiff poker tool to jiggle the debris loose. That usually does the trick without disconnecting the speedo hose to blow black the debris out of the little hole.

If I need to flush do I flush it from the speedo all the way back? Does the line need to be left full of water when I am done?

i use a tiny drill bit attached to vise grips. slowly turn and pull out the debris; like a cork screw. hold the drill bit straight and be careful not to snap it.
reverse flush out.

Re: Ran Yamaha F115 into sand bar, Speedo don't work

OK now I am stumped. The hole that I am assumming is the pitot hole is on the right side of the lower unit (me facing the bow) and has a small groove leading to it. There does not appear to be wnything in the hole, I can run a pipe cleaner up this hole with no obstruction. I disconnected teh hose leading to the speedo at the junction of the lower unit. I can blow into the hose leading to the speedo and the needle moves. I can lso run a pipe cleaner down the hose towards the lower unit. It hangs up slightly after about two inches where I belive there is another fitting. I can work the pipe cleaner though this tight spot and then push it its full lenth without obstruction. If I hook water up to the engine flushing system water comes out the lower hole. But I can not make water run down through the hole, I even rigged up an adapter to hook the hose directly to the garden hose and not one drop of water woudl come out the lower hole. I tried working a drill bit in the hose downward but it hit the tight spot I turned it slightlyh and got some black plastic which makes me assume this is another fitting. Frustrating that I can work the pie cleaners in so far form each end but no water. Any chance I have the wrong hole or is there a check valve or sometihing in the line?

The hole you are looking for is on the front edge of the lower unit not the side.
It is a very small hole
