Mine is a 1966 Holman Moody Volvo outdrive. I want to check the oil and refill or replace if needed. Can anyone tell me the type and amount of lube needed. And, does it get filled all the way to the top.

What is the outdrive model number? If it's a 200 or newer it takes 30W Engine Oil.

That vintage could vary. All took engine oil except the AQ100 which takes gear lube. DP's also take gear lube.

do you know the Volvo model number?

Post a pic if you can.

edit-as usual, Don is one step ahead of me.:)

I'm posting a pic and now have another question. What is the procedure for filling and changing the fluid?

It's a 280 outdrive. (Newer than 66)

There is a dipstick on the top of the drive. Fill so the level is on the flat part of the dipstick. I like to keep the level in the upper part of the flat.
With the drive down, pull the back cover off the drive, there is a big plug on the upper right of the shift mechanism. Remove it and make a funnel to fit into the hole and pour the oil in slowly. until full. Allow to set for a while to make sure the air is out and the oil level is correct.
Takes about 2.5 quarts of oil.

Re: volvo outdrive oil

....dahhhhhh. But I do really appreciate all the advice I get from this forum. It has helped me get out on the water a number of times this year, not all of them without problems but none the less it is where I want to be.
Not everybody has a lot of money or time to spend having a real mechanic to do the work for us. And to mention the pride felt when we know our boats better than the alphabet.
Going out
