late 50's johnson 10hp not shifting

took out to lake, ran strong for a while, motor starts great but won't shift into

gear forward/reverse. What do you suggest I check?

Shift linkage? Remove the little oval plate on the side of the leg and make sure the upper and lower shift rods are firmly attached to the coupler. Bolts hold them in place.

If shift linkage is ok, check the shear pin in the prop, could be sheared.

removed oval plate- shaft does not move. But thanks- can you tell me more about the shear pin? Where is it located and the removal of it.

If you are watching the shift shaft and it does not move, the trouble might be where the shift linkage attaches to the shift handle under the power head.

Is your shift handle moving? That shift shaft should be moving up and down. That is what moves the arm that moves clutch dog to shift gears.
