How do folks overcome this when backing into a slip on the oppoiste side of the dock? Right now I can back right in no prob, but on the other side the boat does not turn at all. Im sure each boat is different.

What gear the lower unit is in has no effect on the steering. Outboard, or inboard. 2 seperate systems altogether. You should have full range of steering no matter which way the prop is spinning.

You missed it completely. I am talking about backing up my boat into a slip. Has nothing to do with gears or lower unit.

use forward gear for steering and reverse to back in.... any time it gets out of line a little blip of forward wil fix it right up

Most boats are actually the same. It's a function of the rotation of the prop. In our old boat, if I, or a passenger, stood against the starboard gunwale while I had the wheel hard over to the right, it would turn to the right in reverse. Otherwise, you had to pick places where you only needed to back to the left.

DuoProp and Bravo 3 drives do not have this problem. That is one of their very nice advantages.

Inboard boats with a fixed propeller shaft will only back up one way. It has to do with the rotation of the prop and how the thrust is projected. Right hand props back up the opposite of left hand props. A rudder on an inboard is only functional in forward.

If you have twin engines, you can pit one against the other and back up just fine.

Outboards or I/Os have a similar response, but not nearly as sensitive because the prop shaft can be turned side to side.

If you have an inboard always approach the dock so when you back up you will head in the right direction. If you have an outboard drive, go slow and adjust your throttle response and steering wheel so the boat heads the right way. Just takes practice.

DP and Bravo 3 drives are better at backing than a single prop drive, but they still turn better to starboard when backing and boat design seems to affect it. My Bravo 3 will only skew to port, then back in a straight line (but with the boat skewed) as it picks up speed with the wheel hard over to port, but will turn on a dime to starboard.

Dave, my B3 was the opposite, it turned to port in reverse better than starboard. But it still turned to starboard well. It's just that it turned in circles to port.

Never noticed any difference with my B3 backing in either direction. Guess I'll have to do a test this weekend!
