Can any one tell me if a aftermarket automotive fuel guage is the same as a marine guage. Also what is the normal water temp for a 1986 mercruiser 170 running at speed.

The auto gauge is likely the same as the marine one. Check the ohm range of the senders to be sure. That I/O motor should have a 160* thermostat, so it should run in that heat range.

Thanks. My temp runs at about 175 % to 180 % is that to hot.

Marine and auto fuel gauges are very likely NOT the same. Why mess with an auto gauge when the proper, "sealed" marine gauge is relatively inexpensive. Get one right here on IBoats or try Great Lakes Skipper if you don't care what it looks like and can use new-old stock. Marine fuel senders measure 33 ohms full, 109 ohms half full and 240 ohms empty (give or take a tad on all numbers).
