I would like to wire my stereo so that it is connected to a switched 12v source rather than to the ignition. I have a 2 pole toggle switch but I am not the most efficient electronics guy. Can anyone please let me, in an elementary fashion:redface:, know how to wire this switch?

Re: Toggle Switch

Very simple. Run a 16GA red wire from the battery (with an inline 5A fuse holder within 7" of the battery) to the middle terminal of the toggle. Connect the red power lead from the stereo to the bottom terminal. Connect the yellow wire directly to the batt, with, again, a 5A inline fuse within 7" of the batt. This allows your stereo to keep it's presets.

Enjoy!!

Why a separate switch?? Doesn't the radio have an ON-OFF button?

You would think...

I think the OP is thinking about how a car is wired, not a boat...

Davey,
Even if you power up the stereo from a toggle, you're still going to have to press the on/off button on the unit, like Silvertip said...

I prefer this method as well, just in case someone leaves the radio on with the volume all the way down, gives you a visual if the radio is on.

Not true, my Sony is on a switch and when the switch is off its off and when I switch it on the stereo comes on without using the on/off button. Not for sure about the wiring cause it was done by the previous owner and works like a charm memory and all.

How old is the head unit?

Re: Toggle Switch

If you can't remember to hit the OFF button on the stereo, what is going to remind you to hit the toggle switch. Then how about the bilge pump, nav lights, live well lights. If being forgetful is an issue, then install a MASTER power switch that kills the feed to the fuse/breaker panel. Then and only then do you know everything is off and you only have one switch to hit. As for stereos that power up when power is applied, that is a setup option and it does not apply to "all" stereos.

Re: Toggle Switch

That is certainly correct. But remember, the yellow wire coming off the the back of the head unit must always be wired constant hot.

Re: Toggle Switch

Because, as Silvertip alluded to, some units will require the use of the on/off button on the control face to turn the unit on, regardless of a toggle or not. Your's doesn't, which is great, the toggle will give you exactly what you want...
