Thinking about buying an old boat with a Seahorse 80Hp motor, but owner knows nothing about boat or motor, including if it runs or not (prop barley turns in my hands).

I don't want something that will costs a crap load of money to fix and boat isn't worth the cost of a new motor.

Thanks,
William

Welcome to iboats.

Do you know how long she was sitting? If it has been a few years, you will be looking at a couple hundred bucks minimum to get her going. Waterpump, carb kits, plugs, etc....

I believe thats a '66 without checking the chart, so may need new coils and other ignition components as well.

I would check the compression and spark bare minimum. Check the lower unit for water intrusion. If you do go ahead and decide to rebuild her, check out the FAQ on this site for a thread entitled, "Awakening a Sleeping Outboard"

.....may also want to invest in an OEM Service manual, will be money well spent ;)

If you enjoy working on outboards as many of us on here do, should be some fun.

Cannot match that model number.

Yes, that is it... V4AL-18C.
As long as it costs 1,000.00 or less to fix it, I am cool.
I work on car motors, not boat motors, I know nothing about them.

So yes, it will be fun!!

Lots of useful knowledge on here....and I would take my advice about investing in an OEM service manual, it will be worth its weight in gold.

Check ebay

Good luck!

Any chance of finding a wiring diagram online? I need to know where a solid brown and a white with red stripe wires are supposed to go to.

If the motor is a white color, it is a 1966, if it is a shade of green, then it is a 1967. These were the only 80hp models made. It evolved from the 74hp V-4 made from 1960-65 and it was followed by the 85 that was only made in '68 of that design.

Re: Seahorse Model # Help

Yes it is a 1966, but I need a diagram that shows what wires go where. I replaced each wire with a black wire (only thing I had), I did one at a time and I am sure I got everything back to where it came from, however I ended up with an extra wire. I think I know where it goes, but I want to make sure.

Also, before I replace (spliced) the wires, the motor turned over, just wouldn't start (no fire).

Now it just clicks, and I think I traced it back to the coil. I removed the starter and it still clicks. I don't know why this is happing because it worked before hand.

BamBamm,

Good luck with your motor, I have the exact same motor that I'm just starting to work on and everything seems original and funtioning. I'm going to do a compression test, replace the water pump, and rebuild the carbs before doing anything else like starting the motor. The next few weeks I should have that accomplished. If all goes well I plan to restore the boat and motor this winter.
