I have a 1972 125 johnson with the electric shift. I have taken it out a few times and have had no problems. the guy I bought it from spent $2300 having it rebuilt so I figured for $250 with the 73 searay boat and galvinized trailer I got a heck of a deal. I have spent hours and hours and lots of driving to dealers and found out my engine was not equiped with **** holes. I have herd of a few people adding a line to something and drilling a hole so it blows water out. anyone done this before? I have a little bit of water coming out the 2 top holes with exhaust but not much. Im not sure how high to turn the garden hose up with the nut cracker clamps on.. got any input?

You will get some misting out of the two exhaust relief holes at the top of the midsection. On a cold engine, it will take about a minute for the vernatherm (thermostat) to open-then you will get the watery mist out of the holes when it is running. It's a good sign that the impeller is working on that model.

I get a mist out of the two holes. last night I hooked up the garden hose and let it run for about 10 minutes while watching for water flow change and nothing happened. still had a little mist. I have run it 3/4 throttle for about 40 minutes twice last friday and the 2 weekends prior to that with no problems. I am just concerned the I should be having more water coming out then I am getting.

My memory is pretty bad on that model. I can tell you that my 79 pumps streams of water out of the exhaust relief when on plane. Your model has the older (single stat) cooling system and it may not. A sure way to check it is with a laser temp gun. Borrow one or rent one at an auto parts store. The vernatherm should open at 145 degrees, so I'd think the temp could run up to 155 at a normal idle on a hot day. Cooler when on plane.
