Alright guys ive been through this entire thing...11 volts at the electric tilt motor the motor is pushing the book suggested 27 inch pounds of force...the shaft isnt bent the spring isnt broken everything things is running smoothly but it will still not run the prop up...it tries but i must help it out..it comes down smoothly but i just can't understand why its not coming up...i cleaned the motor and everything the prop comes up by hand (with the quarter moon off) just fine?!

There are several nylon washers in the system between the motor and the work gear. These are critical to the operation of the unit. It was a poorly designed system and needs constant TLC.

Also if the bushing on the spur gear get too worn it will get kinda jammed in the housing.

It's also important to have the proper amount of spacing between the tilt clutch housing cover & casing so it's not putting too much pressure on the clutch shaft. I ended up buying some gasket material and doubling up the gasket to add a touch more depth to the housing & that helped immensely. I would also try fully charging your battery and trying again with a completely fresh charge. That system seems incredibly sensitive to the amount of electrical juice you can give it. Finally, make sure the tilt pivots (trunions?) are well greased (zerks under the bumpers on either side of the outdrive - the bumpers just pry off).

Also, be sure your solenoids are in good shape (though it sounds like they're ok if it'll go up with help). You can try shorting across the solenoid with a heavy screw-driver to see if it works by itself. If it does, consider replacing the solenoids or at the very least redoing the connections so they're free of any corrosion.

try connecting a jumper wire from the positive battery to the motor directly unplug the connector and touch the blue wire inside the connecter to the tilt motor then try the green i believe is up if the outdrive goes up without assistance you can find the culprit elsewhere. the switch, solonoid, bad ground etc.. do also add an additional gasket to the tilt housing as someone else commented. my tilt motor works great now that i soaked the clutches in gasoline overnite and reinstalled them packing the whole housing with marine grease instead of 30 wt oil and no worries about water intrusion to tilt motor anymore it cant get passed the grease i repack every year now see ya

Re: OMC 83' power tilt troubleshooting

Thanks guys i will try to grease up the bushings tmw and i will also try the battery trick...i tried running it with the engine running too to see if the extra kick from the alternator would work..and it actually did when i revved the motor to about 3k..i only ran into 1 nylon wash on the drive shaft after the spyder gear that drives the clutch pack..and i also had to Tig my cover because the previous owner cracked the case..tig welding made the cover out of round so i had to throw it in my lathe and I already have a gasket in there but im considering another? how thick of gaskets are you guys running? and what would be better 30W oil or just grease?...im thinking the motor might need replaced if all else fails? hard to believe especially when it passed the torque test!

If it worked when you revved the engine, that definitely sounds like weak battery to me. Something may be binding some making the motor have to work harder too which is why it could work with more juice. If the clutch housing cover is on to tight or isn't perfectly aligned with the shaft inside, it could be adding a lot of friction to the shaft.

I haven't measured the thickness of my gaskets, but I'm using 2 home-made gaskets stacked on top of each other and it does the trick. Maybe 1/8".

I switched to marine grease instead of oil. The oil would never last & was constantly replaced with water. Water still gets in with the grease, but the grease doesn't go anywhere and keeps things lubed nicely.
