Need some help with OMC controls

I have 55hp 1993 Evinrude. It came with the controls, but I am not sure if those are the right controls. The controls have a red plug at the end of the wire bundle. Motor does not look like it has something similar.

So here is a question, what is next? Cut out the red plug and try to fid matching wires and pigtail them together?

I was under the inpression that they went away with the red plug at the motor and the controls at the same time around 95-96...

maybe someone has altered the 55 hp to fit a newer control somewhere in the past

Sorry Bob, is red plug a newer style or older?

This motor came with the spare parts motor that actually has a red plug on it, so I am thinking that controls belonged to it. Said that, I am not sure how much work it is to take a red plug from the parts motor and fit it to the working one (and if it is even possible) OR get rid of the red plug on the control level and pigtail wires (also not sure f it is possible).

So Big question is is any one of these scenarios possible? and also which one is preferable?

reg plug is the older style..

and with all the adapters OMC makes you can do any combination you want probably!!!
