1988 force 50. Bought the boat a few weeks back. it runs. I don't think it's cooling properly. I suspected the impeller so I pulled the lower unit. Impeller and water pump were in excellent condition (newer 6 vane impeller) I installed a tell tale and put the muffs on. no water is coming out tell tale. I'm at a loss here. No water is coming out the exhaust port on the lower unit either.

i am getting some warm water escaping from one of the bolts holding the lower unit onto the leg. Didn't run it more than a minute or two for fear of hurting something. thanks for the help!

Re: watering problem?

not sure how much you know about force motors but my 125 don't spit water out of a hole like most motors, it just sprays a mist out of the back and only sprays when the thermostat opens. i also found that mine did not work well when i used the muffs, i had to run it in the water. my guess would be check the thermostat and not use the muffs and try running it while in the water.

It's pretty common to see low or no flow of water with the muffs. Best to submerge the lower unit in a tub of water up to the cavitation plate, or in a lake.

The 50 needs a special muff.It looks like a regular muff with about 1" cut off the top and bottom of the cup on both sides. If you use the regular muffs it won't get enough water to cool and will overheat.
I looked for a pic but couldn't find it anywhere.Maybe someone that knows what I'm talking about will post a pic.J

Re: watering problem?

Put the boat in the water as recommended. water is flowing, albeit not a steady stream at idle. Give it a little rpm thou and shes flowin pretty good. any reason why it wouldn't be a steady stream at idle and do i need to be concerned?

thanks,

Jess

Re: watering problem?

i had a guy bring his boat with a force 125 over this weekend, he had no water coming out at idol. but good preasure at higher rpm. i took out the impeller and it looked good, but i had replaced it anyway. now it sprays good at idol. i would say you should change the impeller anyway they are only like 40 bucks and i feel you'd be better just changing it, cuz you realy don't want it to over heat.
