I have an OMC 5.7 Litre 1986 Reinell..

Fuel pump went bad tring and I am trying to install a new one...

The rod comes down on the cam shaft and I suppose to hold it up and slip in the fuel pump lever so its under it..

Man ... I can get it under but cant seem to start the bolts, keep gasket in place and make sure the rod is up ...

2 hours and lots of words..

Any ideas ..? Instructions say to use a hack saw blade to hold up... .. does not work...

Any ideas.. Thanks

They can be a pain exspecally if you have no room. Use srewdriveer to hold the rod back than slip the fuel pump rod in under. when you get the pump under the rod your fine. you might want to have somebody to bump the motor over so that the rod will be at its highest point that way you have no presure against the fuel pump pushing it out. Good luck

I am pretty sure I have the cam at the highest point because I can push the rod all the way up ...

NO. Use what full stringer said. Use good RTV sealant, between the gasket and fuel pump. Let it set up at least 20 minutes with the gasket FLAT against the fuel pump. If you are still having trouble with the rod..use a small magnet to hold it up while you slip the pumparm under it. At least the gasket will stay in its home, and minimize an oil leak. Grease will ruin the gasket.

Use heavy grease to hold it in place. Not a ton just a smear. SOP on a Chevy.

Ayuh,... There should be a Hole in the forward face of the block, directly in-line with the fuelpump pushrod, insert a bolt,+ tighten, Lightly against the pushrod...
Install the fuelpump, then remove the keeper bolt...

The hole in the front should have a short bolt in it or you will have an oil leak. I had forgotten about that one. I am not sure if the newer blocks even have that hole tapped. It was used for front motor mounts in the 60's cars.
