I've got a 1996 115hp Johnson looper. The thing smokes pretty bad at idle. I want to check out the recirc valves, got the syringe and isopropal alchohol. the ports on the block take fluid both ways. the ports on the intake manifold don't seem to take it either way. What is the proper result when testing these check valves? should the block ports go both ways and what's up with the intake valves, blocked? Can these be removed and cleaned?

2nd question - I just put in a new solenoid because I'd stripped the positive battery terminal while replacing a regulator rectifier. first time out it was fine started right up and charged fine. The second trip a week later it's not throwing the starter gear just spinning, after a few turns of the key it catches. Did I get a bad solenoid or screw something else up?

recirc valves are check valves, they are only supposed to work one way, if they pass fluid in both directions replace or get them working. That might requires a sonic cleaner or something.

You might not be getting all the voltage to power the starter solenoid, check cables , look for corrosion. Maybe use a meter and look for v drop at the starter.

where are these valves...i have the same motor.. and i didnt even know about these things.

and what is there purpose and what happens if they dont work properly??

are they the things the hose from the airbox drains into??

thanks

Re: 1996 115hp recirc valves

There are 4 on the block the two on the starboard side are easy to see, port side is a bit of a reach, one is behind the starter solenoid. It's easier to see everything if you remove the lower cowl. I'm still trying to figure out the hose that goes to the airbox, I think it's got the 3way check valve.

I'm guessing the ones on the block should only allow fluid out of the block. How about the ones on the intake mainifold, I assume they should only let fluid into the mainifold? I've heard they are pressed, what's the best way to remove and install them on the mainifold?
