Re: transom questions

I think he's got it right, the transom don't go to the very bottom on those boats. I believe their a Starcraft built hull too, very similar to an SS Starcraft.

I've done a few things when it comes to coating transoms. I also lay up a center layer of glass for added strength, and put a layer of epoxy and one layer of glass over the whole panel when I can, but if thickness is an issue, I just coat the whole transom with epoxy. I'd also predrill the drain holes and get those insides well coated, make sure you drill them large enough to accept some new drain tubes. I also seal those drains and all bolt holes with 5200 sealer. I pretty much assume that it's going to be underwater and shoot to protect the wood for that type of service. No wood exposed, no unsealed holes, and it'll out last you.

Keep in mind that it most likely lasted 30+ years with the minimum of care, so anything you do is a huge bonus for it longevity wise!

Re: transom questions

Most drain hole tubes require a 1 inch hole, I drilled mine to 1 1/4 without looking around first, turns out it's a heck of a lot easier to find a tube for a 1 inch hole at a marine store.

Re: transom questions

Here's a picture of mine with the aluminum added. I cut it shy of the slot that the transom fits into (Too shy actually). Also cut off most of the splashwell.

Poly resin does not hold up without glass so I would not recommend coating it with that. If you don't want to spend the money on epoxy...then just go with a quality porch and floor paint. Here's your new drain tubes http://www.wholesalemarine.com/p/S-D-520320-1/

Re: transom questions

I got the transom all painted with a good oil base porch paint. I also sanded and painted the alum skin part of the transom and the splash well with automotive epoxy primer and acrylic enamel paint. Now I need to seal up all the splashwell joints. I have some 3M 5200, but all it says is "for application on wood and abraded gelcoat". This makes me think that it wouldn't stick to the shiny new paint. Anyone have any experience with this? I might should use a regular automotive seam sealer like 3m 8300.

Re: transom questions

I used it to seal up my splashwell a couple weeks ago and abused the boat a lot since then, the 5200 has held up well. Also got some on my newly painted shiny transom and laquer thinner takes it off with A LOT of work.
