considering the damage you may accidently cause, the safest way is to call a locksmith. I suspect that you could drill it out.

Yep get a locksmith out there, I wonder if you grabbed it with a pipe wrench and turnrd out the whole stud without it snapping off, but then you would still be faced with getting the thing off.

The SS shroud has a flat spot the lays next to the housing to prevent twisting it off. Don't think I want to chance a torch. Maybe a very good drill bit and use an "easy out" to unscrew it. Be just my luck I'd twist the easy out off.

You can see how long the stud is....
I would try a cut off wheel, as close to the stud as possible.....
The heat needed to melt steel will destroy the aluminum bell housing......;)

WOW  Is that to keep someone from stealing your drive? I would never have thought that unbolting a drive and walking off with it would be a problem i'd have to look out for.

30 seconds or less to remove a drive and steal it
Best way is to drill/grind/dremel the brass key out

The die grinder, with a cut off wheel would be the best way to go.

HOWEVER. Use a full face-sheild, and glasses. A dust mask will be a good idea as well.

You most likely do not have a air die grinder. Using a dremel would be like escaping from prison using a spoon to dig the tunnel.

Buy an electric die grinder (straight) and good quality 2"-3" diameter cut off wheels. Norton is the best. And cut that piece of crap in two. Cut where you believe you will catch a little of the bolt. This way, you will be sure the entire piece of crap will release with one cut. If the first threads get roughed up, champher them with the wheel and you will be all set.

Done this before. Works great. Also, If you have a master padlock of any sort that you can't open, you will laugh at how easy the cut off wheel will get through the "case hardend" hasp.

Good luck.

It was real easy to remove the lock. Just took a center punch and tapped both sides to loosen and then tapped it counter clockwise and it easily unscrewed.
