I have done the transom, stringers and motor mount on my 79 tempest. its a mercruiser 4cyl I/O we had a marina install a new gimbal bearing and outdrive water pump. ive been trying to install the outdrive for 3 days straight like 12 hour days of fighting and somthing just wont work with me. i have the box in drive, the outdrive in drive and everything, everything seems to line up i have tried to use these BS alignment tools they tell me its perfect after messing around with the alignment, i go to put the outdrive on it slides on right over the studs and everything i reach behind the motor and the shaft is engaged with the splines and the outdrive has about 3/4 of and inch to go before flush but it wont budge! ive tried wigliing and fighting with no avail. can someone please help me! also when we took the engine out like 3 months ago i kinda lost track of how the rear mount bolts and spacer sleeve go, as of right now i have it installed in this order ENGINE over TRANSOM bracket with the gold sleeve inbetween the two then the bolt going through from top to bottom does it sound like i have that right???

ANY help will be great this is the last step before splashdown and i would really like to do it. THANKS in advance:D

Re: Cant install outdrive

You used the BS alignment tool and it goes all the way in?

Id guess that your not aligned. Have you given the tool a whack with a big rubber hammer? if no, your probably still not right.

Re: Cant install outdrive

You may have a bad gimble bearing. Or your engine is out of alignment. You say the tool goes in? Rotate the engine in 90 Deg. increments and see if the tool goes in just as easy. If it does not, you have alignment problems. When it's correct, the drive should slip on very easy with not much force.

Good luck.

Go to the "adults only" section, #9, download Merc manual #3 (that should cover your engine), section 2 (2A-2) there are photos of the rear mount. Good luck.

rear mounts should be tight before alignment , lube orings and grease thshifter dlide to hold in place and drive and shifter are both in fwd so shoe and foot line up underneath.

they can get stuck on the o-rings. remove o-rings and see if it slides easily then. if so, replace the o-rings and give it a kick.

"Rotate the engine in 90 Deg. increments and see if the tool goes in just as easy. If it does not, you have alignment problems"

that is wrong if you rotate your engine in 90 deg increments and the alignment goes off thats a bad coupler.

heres what to do first check your rear engine mout hardware it goes in this order correct me if im wrong. lock nut under rear transom mount then fibre washer sits on top of transom mount then the double wound lockwasher sits on top of fibre washer then engine goes in and sits on top of them. then put in that spacer then the washer on top of spacer then bolt and torque rear engine mount to proper torque.

then lube up your alignment bar with grease stick it in hole and line up your gimbal bearing if its hasnt been done yet. then slide the bar in further til it goes into the couler and tap it in with a rubber mallet to make sure your all the way in. then go around a circular pattern and tap the alinment back to center it.

then pull it out apply a little more grease and slide the alignment bar in by hand pull it out and check the spline tracking in the grease to see if the spline tracks are all equal.

Re: Cant install outdrive PLEASE HELP!!!

tapped it on with a rubber mallet, went in fine after a couple taps. does this sound normal??? NEW GIMBAL bearing seemed like i just had to tap the tapered shaft through the new bearing

Re: Cant install outdrive PLEASE HELP!!!

anyone know if this sounds alright im guessing it does because it didnt take a ton of force to get it in just some beating/taping with a rubber mallet
