Honda 40hp overheating?

Crossing the lake yesterday, I had the overheat buzzer sound. I brought er to a stop did a visual inspection of motor. Nothing was coming out the (tell tale/ cooling indicator port/ pee hole). I shut down, took off motor cowling, detached the 5-6" rubber hose connecting the motor to the port. Blew through it attached to the motor, blew, attached to the port, blew. I then re-attached both ends, started motor, all is well....not. Happened intermittently 3 more times through out the day. I did same and had same success, temporary. I was always able to produce a stream and get under way.

What could be blocking or interfering? How do I clean and/or purge the cooling system.

Honda 40 HP, 4-stroke attached to a 22' pontoon boat.

Re: Honda 40hp overheating?

Chances are you have lost a couple vanes from the water pump impeller.Pull the gearcase down and inspect, pretty much where you start in any overheat situation.

My 10hp was acting similarly. I replaced the impeller...didn't fix the problem. I finally removed the lower unit, the manifold and associated hoses and blew out every thing with my compressor, making sure air flowed well through it all. I put it back together and it worked beautifully.
