Johnson 30HP air filter?

I have a Johnson 30HP Model #J30TELCOA on a 14ft. Mr. Pike boat, ...took it out for the first time to a local lake, ..it started fine, seemed to run fine until I tried to bring it past 1/3rd open throttle, then it just bogged and would die if throttle wasn't pulled back.

I'm quite knowledgable about many engines (cars, trucks), ..just not boat engines. This is the first boat I've ever owned. When I took the cover off the engine, I noticed right away that there was no air filter or filter holder that bolts to the carb air intake. I can clearly see, two bolt holes where one would go, but it is simply absent.

So, knowing how a Quadrajet responds on a car where the filter and filter pan are removed, ..when trying to open the throttle it boggs severely.

Out on the lake, I tried to create some air flow restriction by placing my thumb over the air intake of the carb and by doing that, it allowed me to open the throttle.

QUESTION: Is there, in fact, an air filter and filter case that is supposed to be bolted onto this engine? If so, does anyone here have one for sale?

Please advise.

Thanks a million!!!

If it's supposed to have one, does anyone have a part number for this item?

Please let me know.
Thanks again!

if you need an airfilter where your boating please check your depth sounder or GPS.
no airfilter.
a few models had an airbox to help silence some reed noise.
none had an airfilter.
by placing fingers over the carb you forced it rich and closed off some air.
clean the carb paying close attention to the main jet.

Thanks for the response! So, would you recommend running a can of Sea Foam through the tank? Or just shoot the carb with some carb cleaner?

Thanks again!

I believe the suggestion is for a carb removal and rebuild, at least that is what I would do.

Re: Johnson 30HP air filter?

OK I've rebuilt many Delco Quadrajets and I've even rebuilt the Mikuni's on my '83 1100 Kawasaki.

Is there any info on the web that you might be able to direct me to so I can possibly do this rebuild myself?

Thanks!

Your best bet is to go ahead and take the plunge and buy the OEM manual. It will ansewer all your questions and help in troubleshooting your engine. If you plan to maintain your own engine, the manual will be a life saver.

Rebuild the carb. It's very straightforward. The OEM kit includes a float level guage. Other than that, just make sure you clean every orifice.

There is NO air cleaner/filter.

If you've done carbs. this will be the simplest you've run across. Outboards run in a dust free environment so no air filter is needed. Best of luck. Rick.
