Hello, my father currently has a mercruiser 454 alpha 1 and recently broke a water pump. When we went to replace it, our mechanic suggested we flush out the hoses with water. Only problem is, the two noted designs for this mercruiser 454 (in this case an 88', but I believe there were only 2 water pump designs in general) do not seem to match the hose configuration for this engine. Also, it seems in both designs there is a heat exchanger of some sort (an oil cooler perhaps?) bellow/to the side of the engine which must be flushed too. However, the only item that seems to match this is the oil canister-type thingy across from the engine (I really wish the diagrams i have labeled that part) - there are no canisters bellow it, or anywhere near where the water pump was.

Can someone please identify which hose to flush! I feel like my head is about to explode! pictures here plus diagrams of the two water pump config's, which can be found at www.marinepartsplus.com

Here are the two configurations, first the older than the newer. It looks kind of like the older, but it's hardly identical. There are to many differences to count, you can see many of them here in the pictures

Note that under the thermostat (not the housing lid but the housing body under it) has no hoses coming out of it.

And here is the oil canister thingy...

What do yo mean by broke water pump? Are you talking about the seawater pump in the drive or the circulating pump on the drive?

If seawater pump lost a few vanes then you need to start with #24 on the second diagram. This is the water intake from the pump. pull it off and flush it. Then flush out the P/S cooler and the hose running from it up to the t-stat housing.

Yes, it's the seawater pump and it lost all the vanes.
I can't find hose #24...I can't see the resemblance to the diagram.
Funny enough though the mechanic I was talking too said to flush the same circuit but in reverse, starting at hose 18...any comments on this?

I just see the diagrams. If they were not scaled to fit the thread, a moderater might have deleted on the move. Otherwise bit bucket. Repost.

Look at the bottom of your original post - pics were deleted by moderator.

Doesn't really matter what order you do it in. Just take them all apart and flush. You found #18, work backwards from there throught the PS cooler and on to the drive.

Re: The Mystery Mercruiser 454

The reason neither of those pictures look right, is because they are both raw water cooled systems and you have a fresh water cooled system.

The only thing that will be the same is hose #24 and the PS cooler. They are both UNDER the engine, no where close to the overhead shots you took. The same process mentioned above applies. Start with #24 and backflush, then the PS cooler, then the hose coming out of it (probably feeding the heat exchanger) then the heat exchanger.
