 I have been trying to revive an 85 xr2 150. I rebuilt the carbs, fuel pump and all oil and fuel lines are new also put in a new water pump along with replacing lower unit oil. The motor had been running rough but had fire in all the cylinders last week. Anyway as of saturday I had no spark on the port side of the motor. I swapped my red and blue wires with my switch box but no change, I also unhooked my yellow wires from the rectifier and still no change only the starboard side still gets spark. Can anyone give me a bit of help please

There is a troubleshooting procedure for that ADI ignition on the CDIElectronics.com web site.

Re: 85 150 ignition woes

I have looked and read that, I will check all my resitances with a multi meter tonight. Is there anything else that could cause this problem or symptoms. Now i did here from some one that it could be a low idle issue and that once it comes up on plane or around mid rpm it advances to allow the ignition to kick on the rest of the cylinders. Now the last time it was out on the water (last Week) it was bogging down a little bit but with some coaxing it comes up on plane and smooths out. Any input would be great and is this true about the spark picking back up once it goes above midway on the tach.

Proper linkage and timing adjustments are critical for good throttle response. You just have to suck it up and do a proper link-n-sync by the book.

That's assuming you have good compression, proper stator drive to the switchboxes, (stator DVA readings), bleed lines and bleed check valves in good shape, reeds in good shape, carbs in good shape.

hope it helps

Re: 85 150 ignition woes

Thank you for the input chris1956 and j_martin. I pulled up both the cdi trouble shoot and the link and sync for the carbs and timing. I guess all i need to do now is find time. Is there anything else that might come up and rear its ugly little head while doing this. I know that all of my compresion numbers are well with in spec but i will check them since I will have all pulled apart any how. All I want to do is just start to enjoy this ride but not before it is really ready.

Re: 85 150 ignition woes

Hey let me throw this one out to anyone who can answer or give some feedback. I just started to get ready and try to check the ignition issues I am having and when I sstarted to remove the wires from the switch boxes i found thaqt the ignition stabailizer had the red wire at the base of the unit was completely cracked and coroaded. Could this also be a source of why I am not getting fire on the port side of the motor.

While I'm not sure what problems they cause, everybody here will tell you to remove the stabilizer as they caused more problems than they solved.

It is already off and in the trash bin. Now once i have some time later today i want to see if i can get spark back into the port side and get er re timed. As for link and sync procedure my carbs do not have air-idle adjustment screws or air mixture screws. so if any one knows other than makeing sure that the butterflies open and close and don't past there stops if there is any other adjustments that the carbs might have input would be great.
