17.5' Bowrider on the Columbia River

Hi all,

We are thinking of downsizing. Currently, we have a 1994 Monterey 23' cuddy cabin with a Volvo Penta 5.7L motor. Love the boat, but we don't feel like it's ideal for us. Primarily, it's just a bit too large to constantly trailer (we keep it in the water in the summer).

As such, we are considering a smaller open bow/bowrider. We are looking at the Sea Ray 175 Sport, for example. My main concern is how stable/comfortable a boat of that size will be on the waterways we frequent, which are mostly the Columbia River and Willamette River in Portland, OR. We are fair weather boaters, so rough water typically isn't an issue, but occasionally the Columbia does get a bit choppy when the wind picks up in the afternoon.

What is the general opinion of boats of that size on rivers like the Columbia? If anyone on here has experience on the Columbia with a boat that size, that would be even better.

Just sold a 17.5' Reinell that we used 80% of the time on the Columbia down by Washugal. In general, it worked just fine as it doesn't get too rough out there most of the time.

I remember the first time I took it out was up on lake Merwin and there were probably 3'-4' swells. That was ridiculous! Was sea sick after about 5 minutes. Obviously the smaller you go, the more you'll be tossed about. But I'd say you would be fine in it for good weather boating on the Columbia and Willamette.

I have a 19' bow rider and its fine on the Columbia aslong as you keep an eye on how many passengers you have in the bow. Like you said it nice riding till afternoon or on a busy day. I see plenty of small small boat like 14' out there. Plus if the Columbia gets rough, you can alway enjoy the Willi
