I am just wondering if anyone can tell me what oil to use for my little 4 stroke? I noticed that it is a little on the low side and would like to top it up. Can I just use any 4 stroke oil or does it have to be marine oil? I was looking to maybe get amsoil or lucas oil in 10w30 but decided I should ask on here before I do something I may regret.

Thanks,

Nate

10 people will give you 10 different answers.

When all else fails, read the.............

Both oils will work fine as long as they meet or exceed the manufacturers spec's.

If the motor is NEW, do NOT switch to a synthetic until after the engine is well broken in as the synthetics are so much slicker than standard oils the parts will not 'wear in', wait til the 3d change at least before making the switch.

Nate, Most 4 cycle OBs call for FC-W motor oil. I would see what the Merc dealer recommends. There are non-Merc oils that meet spec, as well.

So I shouldn't just go with a castrol syntec or anything like that? I guess I will make the trip down to the local merc. dealer and see what he is gonna charge me for oil. Since I won't get a straight answer out of him for sure. He will just tell me it has to be their oil or it will mess up the motor just so he can sell more.
