1971 Evinrude 50 hp stalls when I put it in gear

I have a 1971 Evinrude 50 hp outboard. It is a two Stroke. Model #50172S. Long Shaft. Its on a 25 foot harris pontoon. It keeps stalling out when I put it in gear. I originally had a problem with one of the cyliders not firing (top). Causing the bottom one to foul out. I have so far changed the Upper crank seal which made it run better, strong spark with tester both cylinders and 120 pressure in both. But now its stalling as soon as I put it in gear. Carbs Are Spotless, Floats work great. Went down to the Reed plates and those are clean only because I noticed that there was a lot of gas dumping into the front carb canister, looked like from both carbs. I have to replace the intake gasket, couldn't get reed plates out without destroying it, and the gasket was pretty dried out and shot. But due to the reed plates looking good, I kinda feel as though I'm up against a wall here. Any suggestions please. Trying to avoid pulling power head or splitting it. And can't really get timing down/carbs adjusted right until I solve this fuel dumping problem. I am praying it is not a vaccum leak.

Thinking its still in the carbs. Sounds like you may need to install entire carb kits. Have you pressurized the carbs? Needle sticking?

If you are sure the compression and spark are good, and the carbs are operating properly, make sure the idle RPM is correct. To low of and idle will allow it to stall when put in gear.
I think it should be about 650-700 IN GEAR.

Check the stop curcuit. On the power pack there in a black/yellow wire. Disconnect it and see if the problem improves. If it does there is a fault in the engine stop curcuit. Could be ignition switch, short in harness, ot the shift switch.

If that doesnt check out, look for bad wires that are cracked and or corroded.

Thanks guys. I got it all back together tonight and fired it up. Ran good. High Idle though. Tweeked it down on the carbs and popped it into gear. Its the Manuel, not electric shift. Went with no problems. I don't know where the problem was, but it had to be somewhere in the gasket between the intake and power head, or one of the fuel or vacuum lines I replaced going to the carbs. Will take it for a test run tomorrow out on the lake. Got to late to do it tonight. Will let ya know how she sails. Here's a picture of it, completely put back together.

I had / have exact same problem. It turned out to be the carbs, they needed an entire rebuild with new parts.

Well, Idel was high, Don't know what thats about. Slowed it down with the carb adjustment, and put it in gear. Didn't stall, but with I smooth out the carb it still runs high, but thats all the power I got, getting nothing more from the shifter. I'm loosing my mind with this thing.

well, based on your first statement, if you're not sync'd correctly forget about smooth ride.

Bottom carb had its throttle valve stuck wide open, causing the High Idle. With this adjusted and a few carb adjustments, seems all good. Thanks for the suggestions guys, lead me in the right Direction.
