I have a 1989 force 85 hp, starts fine, runs strong, pulls skiers, will troll for hours. But after i have run it for a little while and i shut it off it will not restart till i wait for a while. some people say it could be ignition coils? so any help would be great thanks.

I had a similar issue this past weekend (4th of July) and it looks to be a mix of 2 things.

Idle speed adjustment and the bulb/line

I replaced the bulb even though the original was firming up and I got a tach and adjusted my RPM's and have not had an issue since.

After running and then shutting it down, does it act like it is flooded?

If so, it likely is.

Often caused by failing fuel pump, caused by ethanol containing fuel destroying the fuel pump diaphram.

Easy to rebuild for under $20.

yes it does seem flooded after i try and restart it. I did find a few burnt/melted coils on my stator. could this cause the problem? i took the fuel screen out and the components behind that apart and didnt see any rips. is the fuel pump located some were's else?

If the stator was bad it would die after it got hot.If you have burn spots then start looking for a new one.The round screen is the front of the pump. The diaphram is behind that screen. It should be flat no holes. It will still work if it has been stretched. But change it soon.
The carb air screws should be set at 1 and1/8 turn out.Don't turn in too hard. Lightly screw them in then out 1 and 1/8th turn.J

so what might it be- the diaphram looked okay, the screen was clean. all the plugs seem to be damp after it wouldn't start. all cylinders have good compression. don know were to go, or what direction.

Try pulling the rubber hoses off of the fuel recirc system and spraying carb cleaner in them. Especially the one under the lower carb. If this system is plugged, you will get hard starting after shutdown as the engine is hoarding unburned fuel.
