maybe dumb fuel question

If the boats sits for a couple days the primer ball is empty. I have to squeeze the primer ball about 7 times to get it hard. When I am out on the lake and I fish for awhile in a spot the motor won't start unless I give the primer ball a few squeezes. I am wondering if I need a new primer ball or could something be stuck open in the carbs? The motor runs great once it starts. The motor is 2001 125 I read they are cold blooded motors.

Might be normal, but it's not right. The primer bulb has 2 check valves in it. If they leak back too much, it goes flat pretty quickly. Once it's primed for the day, it should hold for an hour or so.

I'd replace the primer bulb. Fuel line is probably suspect also, maybe just replace the whole fuel line/primer assembly.

hope it helps

I replaced the primer bulb. The bulb will stay hard for half hour then I have prime it again before I can start the motor. I took the fuel pump apart I couldn't tell if the check valves were bad. The fule lines looked good.

Do the newer motors like yours (mine's an 84 90hp) not have the choke button that injects a shot of fuel when you push it? That's all I do on mine after letting it sit for a 1/2 hr or so. There's enough fuel still in the carb bowls to run.

I'm guessing you have an efi motor. First off I'm guessing you're not going to disassemble your high pressure fuel pump (because I sure as he'll wouldn't). The easiest thing like jmartin said is to swap the primer bulb. It seems like MAYBE and I strain the word maybe your vacuum isn't holding enough pressure.

No my motor isn't efi it is carbed. I put a new primer bulb on. I have the enricher button on my motor. The motor still starts hard after sitting awhile unless I prime the bulb.

Don't sound right to me to have to keep priming it after just an hour or so of fishing. We spend a week on the river and never prime the bulb after the first start-up, and the boat/motor sits there for 12 hours overnight. Maybe you need a new primer bulb and check all your fuel fittings, quick-disconnect on front of motor, hoses, clamps, pick-up tube in tank, etc. My 1999 Yamaha primer bulb is still working fine, but I keep a spare primer bulb in my boat, just in case.

Re: maybe dumb fuel question

The primer bulb I have isn't even a month old. My motor doesn't have a quick disconnect on the front of it. The gas line just keeps running to the fuel pump on the motor. The only thing I haven't checked is the pick up tube in the gas tank. I have a built in gas tank. Do I just unthread the elbow where the gas line hooks up to check the pick up tube?

here is what my fuel pick up looks like. The tube is a hard plastic not a rubber and ther was no filter on the end.

Get rid of that tubing. that stuff gets hard and brittle and will suck air. install the correct black fuel line with zip ties or clamps.

The plastic piece was inside the fuel tank. How long of a fuel line should I get to put in the tank?
