Anyone ever sold a project midway?

Let me start by saying that I was about to give my 16' Starcraft SS a final light sanding, a dusting of primer, and the first finish coat today, I had pulled it out of the garage, emptied out all the interior pieces, seats, cushions, and any of the other parts that got tossed in the boat after I finished the deck and transom. The rest of the boat was in zinc primer. A guy that I sold two other boats too in the past pulled up, gave the boat a real once over and asked if it was for sale. My reply was "Not really, but anything has a price". I went on to list that the boat, and trailer were about to get painted, and that after that, the all new interior, windshield, and motor would be installed. His reply was how much for it the way it is?
I didn't answer. I just told him I had more into it than he more than likely wanted to pay. Plus, "Once it get done painting it, it's mine for life, I won't sell it".
He came back by saying just to give him a price. I tossed out $5500, for the boat, painted trailer, (which it came on but I had no intentions of using), and two used motors and one parts motor all of the same year and model, plus the upholstery, glass, trim, and any other parts of the boat. I also told him it would still need a new helm and cable kit once it's all back together. To my surprise he said "Deal! I go get the cash". Pus, "What else do you have that you want to sell for it?" By the time he left, he spend another $800 in odds and ends off other boats, left with three Mercury motors, none of which I was intending to use on that boat, plus the boat, parts, and trailer. Suddenly I'm off to the next project.

The bad part is that I didn't want to sell the thing, but I had no real money in it, and had already considered selling it when it was done since I had another similar boat already nearing completion.

Would anyone else have sold it?

Keep in mind, I kept my mint clean Johnson 70hp that was destined for that boat, I kept the new in the box Sunbrella Bimini top, I kept the fish finder, GPS, and Radio that came with that boat, and keep in mind that I bought it from an estate sale, with no title, and had not yet gone the title route for that boat. (I had planned on using a title service to get the title). He took it with no title, no bill of sale, cash in hand. The deck and transom was professionally done before I got it, all done in 3/4" wood and glass. I also have a mint roller trailer that was to go under that boat that will now find a home under another project. Selling it put a huge chunk of cash in hand, which will pay for fixing two other boats at least, plus it saved me having to go find another roller trailer for the other boat.
It also freed up a big chunk of space in the garage.
My favorite of the Starcraft boats here is my 18' Starchief anyway, this lets me get back to that boat sooner than expected too.
The boat I sold was one that I had bought because it was just too good a deal, but not really what I wanted, and the fact that it had so many new original parts, made it the immediate project which put four other boats on hold. Now it seems I'm back to the original plan on those boats.

You should never sell it unfinished.

Tell him for $5K he can have my 20' center console AND the truck I pull it with, all elecs included and 1994 150hp , strong runner.

You will have to take your boat back I'm afraid.
Mine has clear title and seacast transom, new stringers etc.

I don't want you to die of boredom, just trying to save your life.:D

Awesome luck for you. I just don't understand why he felt the need to throw that kind of money at an unfinished SS? They aren't that hard to find and $1500 would get you a decent one. $5500 would get a practically mint one I would think.

You must have done some kind of good deeds (or taken some hard knocks) in this life or a past one to build up that kind of karma. Either that or you've just put yourself in a big karmic hole.

Ask him if he wants a gutted '79 Terry 450 with no stringers, deck, or transom.

Asking only 2K and that's cutting my own throat ;):D

The buyer is someone that would never do any major work himself. He'll most likely never finish it or end up paying someone to do most of the work. I think he just looked at the floor and transom and figured that sort of job was most of the value, plus the new back to back seats, all the upholstery that's already done, and the rest of the new pieces. The last owner who started the project bought all new OEM pieces back when they were still available. The problem I had with the whole idea is that it really wasn't the lay out I wanted. I would have preferred it to be a Mariner or Sportsman model myself.
The way I looked at it was more space for a few other project boats which I like better. Having just finished the new motor for my Starchief also puts that one back to the top of the list. Something I am looking for is a 16 or 17' flat bottom skiff, I may do some more serious shopping for one now.
To be honest, I'm not sure I'd have asked as much as he offered even if I had completed the boat, at least not with the motor that went with it. I have a mint 70hp Evinrude that was destined for the SS but now will fine a home on my 17' boat.
It all sort of worked out over the past few weeks, I sold a second 70hp motor I had here, which was to be the motor for the 17' boat, but someone gave me far more than I thought it was worth and it too found a new home, I didn't want to sell it but it wasn't as nice as the other 70 I have and for $1200, it just had to go. I figured I'd find a better motor for less sooner or later. Selling this boat saves me chasing after another triple too.

Selling the SS will also let me get a few other non boat projects in the garage, as the SS was about to be suspended from a pair of gantry cranes for paint, which would have tied up the garage for at least a month, between multiple coats of paint and eventually restoring the trailer for resale since I was planning on using a newer trailer.
I'll save and use the paint I bought for the SS for my Starchief, and any other project that comes along. (I got a really good deal when I bought the paint so I bought 6 gallons of white, 8 gallons of light gray, and 3 gallons of blue for trim all in acrylic enamel. Plus I have 3 gallons of unmixed zinc chromate primer).

The Bimini top will fit any other boat, and the other misc pieces like new lights, new cleats, and new step pads will also go on my Starchief now as I just gave the buyer the original pieces that came with the boat, which were all in good shape as well. I just wasn't going to paint the boat and then put on used trim pieces with a fresh paint job.

I plan now to go right to the lumber yard and stock up on ACX plywood to get started on the Starchief, which will now get a more thorough restore than I had planned before.

Yup, I would have done what you did in a heartbeat, and started all over. Or bought myself something better. Make sure you go out and buy a lottery ticket, your luck seems to be running high!!

Re: Anyone ever sold a project midway?

What's really funny is that about 10 years ago, I had gotten away from boating for a while, moved here, and had sold the two boats I had back then. I had picked up a small aluminum boat back then with a side console and bench seats, and a trihull with a 50hp on it. A buddy here talked me out of the trihull, which sort of got swapped for an aluminum V hull, a Starcraft Jupiter, I sold that when I got the SS to make room for a better boat, and had sold the motor that came off the trihull too. With that money bought my Starchief, which I had been looking for for 20 years.
Now I find myself again with a trihull, the Starchief, one 14' boat with a side console and bench seats, an open 15' boat and the open 17' Durateck Sport boat.
I sort of ended up with two of the basically same boats that I had gone after in the beginning when I came here. The trihull, also a Starcraft, is for the river and back bays, the Starcraft will be for longer runs and the bay, and the Duratech and the two smaller boats are for freshwater use. I plan to set the 14' up with a 40hp, and the 15' with a 15hp rebadged as a 9.9 to get in the local lakes, and the Duratech will be for larger lakes, rivers, and when I go on vacation each year.

I would have sold it, the project is half the fun of owning it in the first place! And coming up with ideas in between projects gets me through boring times at work.

Re: Anyone ever sold a project midway?

If I didn't have my 17' Duratech, which I like better than the SS, I'd have never sold it. But the Duratech is longer, about the same width with taller sides, and made of thicker aluminum. I also like it's wide open layout. I plan to set that up as a stick steer boat with possibly with no console at all. The SS being a deeper V would have issues with just one person aboard due to weight and balance. Especially since I'm 6'3" tall and 300+lbs. The smaller splashwell on the Duratech also makes it a much more roomy boat.

I sort of hate to get rid of a boat that is so close to completion, but the fact that selling it saves me buying another motor and having to later decide maybe which one to keep sort of works it all out for me.

His check cleared at his bank this morning, and he's picking it up tomorrow, so I'll have plenty of extra space in the shop now.
I won't know what to do with the extra space, at least until I pull the next boat in.
