Does my 69 18hp have a pinion bearing or bushing?

I have a 69 18hp fastwin model 18902B. The gearcase where the water pump goes is corroded away, under the plate. I bought a used gear case housing on line. The gearcase arrived yesterday. The case looks the same but it has a needle bearing where the pinion gear goes. Mine has a bushing. Looking on line I can only find a replaceable bearing in a 79 25hp. The place I bought the used case from says mine must be from before 68, because all after 68 had a bearing and not a bushing. Is mine original or not? Are they right? Anyone have a good case with a bushing? My pinion will not fit the bearing making this case unuseable to me unless I change the gear set too......David

I'm confused, are you talking about the bearing under the water pump or on the pinion gear?

Thanks for reading.
pinion bearing. The original is a bushing. The replacement case has a needle bearing. Pinion gear for the bushing is way too small for the needle bearing.

No doubt others will chime in, but my guess would be that this was someone's solution to that bushing wearing a bit; they bored out the bushing to accept a needle bearing.

1) Does your driveshaft fit that bearing?

2) What do you mean by "Pinion gear for the bushing is way too small for the needle bearing."?

3) You should be able to get that housing rebushed. The flat face of the bushing serves as a thrust washer so you'll need to address that.

Tim the driveshaft goes into the pinion gear not the bearing. The driveshaft uses a bearing at the top not the bottom. The pinion gear has a shank on the bottom and drops down into the bushing. The bushing has a built in thrust face on it. The replacement case has only a needle bearing without the thrust face and my pinion gear shank is about 1/4" smaller than the inside circumfrence of the needle bearing. I just dont know who is right or wrong. If mine is supposed to have a bearing, the lower unit must be an older unit. There are no online pics of older than 68.

Not sure if it applies to the 18hp, but on the 35/40hp models the early units had needle bearings and the pinion gear shaft just rode on those bearings. If you pulled the pinion gear, the needles would sometimes fall out of the bushing. I believ around 1959 or 1960 they went to a pinion gear with the bearing built right into the end, and that bearing just slid up into the lower unit.

Seems like the best way to find out is to find a parts breakdown for your engine. Then you will have a definate answer.

Try to fit everything together-if it fits, you got it fixed, if not the eBay seller owes you some money.

I have a parts breakdown. None show the pinion bushing/bearing it is a non replaceable part.

You motor needs the bronze bushing, not the bearing style. The new housing you have is the wrong one and is from a much later motor, 1980s era 25 or 28 model. If you can't exchange the housing you received, you might be able to sell it on eBay...
