My wife is making me try to make the motor (1988, 85hp) quieter. I don't mind it but she's sensitive to it and likes to be on the boat (anchored, lol). First thing I did when I bought the boat/motor, was rip the old disentigrated insulation out. I've read all the posts on this topic and am looking around for the best stuff but obviously don't want to break the bank (some stuff is really pricey). I know it won't make that much of a difference, but at least I can say I tried.

What do you all think of this stuff:

or should I just get the duct insulation from home depot? Also not sure if the duct insulation is resistant to oil/fuel/water.

Thanks for your input as always.

Yes foam makes a quieter engine. Make sure your carb intake snout or cover is on also. This will help reduce noise a bit.

That stuff looks a lot like Dynamat that you can buy at most car audio places. You can put that stuff under a car hood so I would think it would work for an outboard too. It'd probably be cheaper to get locally too since you wouldn't pay shipping.

Well picked up a roll of Dynaliner locally for $65 (not to bad). Will install this weekend and let ya all know how much of a difference it makes.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: Another Cowling Insulation Post

So I got the dynaliner installed last night. Also used a 6" wide ice and water shield type product with an aluminum backing i picked up at home depot to tape up the joints in the dynaliner - really sticky stuff and sticks to the dynaliner foam well. Came out real nice and really didn't add much weight to the cowl. Took it out this morning and definitely notice a difference in noise reduction especially at the lower rpm range 2000 - 4000. Not much of a noticeable difference at WOT, because of the wind noise, but all in all I think its worth it.
By the way, in doing this little project, made me wonder where the air flow comes in for the carbs? There is one opening towards the rear or stern side of the cowl at the handle (which I left open of course). Can't see how too much air would come in through this since it faced the opposite direction of air flow. I don't see any other openings for air flow towards the bow end of the motor. Is there supposed to be one?

Opening is in the lower cowling, under the carbs, behind a raised shield.
