I just bought this boat and it runs great with the muffs on in nuetral as well as in gear, but, when i put it in the water she idles like a champ until i put her in gear. She will stall most of the time. On occasion I can get her to run but have to have her idleing high aroung 900 - 1100 RPM and then shift it into gear (quit smothy tho). Even then she will stall most of the time. Thank God I took her to a small lake for the first time out. I managed to kill the battery trying to restart her so many times and had to row back to the dock (about 1/4 of a mile before somebody offered me a tow with an electric moter of all things. Felt pretty funny). Have a pretty good grasp on mechanicin but still have a long way to go. I feel like it might be a fuel issue but not sure. My fuel pump ball thingy that you squeez before you start it, goes soft when running and she wont start until I pump it again. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for rambling on just want to make sure that i get all the info in there.

Change the bulb because it should not get soft it should stay hard. Make sure your choke is working it sure helps when starting the motor.

Search for link and sync., then follow the instructions. Also read ather post on here. You'll find that you need to check compression, spark, ect... A little research goes a long way. By the way, I have a 1966 850, more or less the same motor. I had the same problems. The link & sync did me wonders.

There isn't a factory spec other than there should be no more that 15psi difference between any two cylinders. I have found that generally about 120 is tops. Usually one cylinder ( the top one) goes first .

Stalling in gear is a sign the idle mixture is too lean, it neads to be riched up, ie turn out the low speed jet, 1/4 turn on each carb. Second the fuel ball getting soft means a fuel delivery problem, such as fuel pumps, or the bulb/fuel line is shot, or there is an air leak. Read the following link, it will help you understand how to set up your motor for optium performence.

As for the comp readings, even is good, as usskydvr posted. Anything over 110 is good, 120 better, high 120's great.
When you pull the plugs for the comp test, check them out, do they look good, black n oily, nice and brown, with a bit of white.... they will tell the story of how the motor is running.
