Re: Another Idiot at the Ramp Today

The water is not the place that it will serve you well to be "That Guy". People like that will sooner or later need someones help and bad karma usually has a way of coming around.

Well, it depends on how he would need help. If he can't see to back his boat in after cutting people off, well, screw him. But if he's out on the water in a life or death situation and needs assistance, I will assist without hesitation.

On the ramp, each to his own, out on the water, we're a team trying to make sure all the teammates make it back alive and well.

Remember, that karma thing works both ways.

Just another reason to have a car topper that you can pick up and carry to the water, and back again.

Re: Another Idiot at the Ramp Today

Not taking a side here, but I ramp I use for striper fishing in the fall is a 2 lane ramp, a ramp on both sides of a floating dock. The "understanding is the boats in line to be pulled out determine order. I have been in line for 50 minutes last fall as the boats were lined up 2 by 2 (up 20 boats waiting) to the ramp. If the right ramp moved faster then the left line had to wait. The boat at the ramp determined your spot. I always thought it was the boat at the ramp determined order. If someone backed down their trailer on the ramp but their boat was not there, how do they maneuver around the other boats? I guess if its a single wide ramp, more then 1 trailer can be loaded up.

Following this logic to determine order, how does a boat ever get in the water when boats are lined up to get out? If I would have had to wait on everybody coming out at 5 o'clock I would have never got in. Plus in this case there were more empty trailers in line than boats and he got in front of all of them too. His boat was at the dock and others were out in the water waiting for the trailer to come down the ramp.

Like my wife said if he would have just said "my wife is on the boat at the dock and she is sick or something like that" we would have let him go without even thinking about it.

Why can't they enforce that one launch is for retrieval and one is for launching then??? I for one sometimes don't have all day to retrieve... If I did I wouldn't be needing to leave. Where as the people getting onto the lake must obviously have more time. Just saying

I love "my" ramp, there's hardly ever any issues, or a crowd. This was this past Friday, on a beautiful day on the Bay.
I was the ONLY rig there

This had to be at Alum Creek. Was it? If so, it's par for the course at that lake. I feel safer on the open waters of Lake Erie than I do at AC with it's overpopulation of mindless idiots. It's no surprise there have been two boating related deaths out there so far this summer.

Not much one can do about ramp idiots. Sit back and enjoy the show!

Re: Another Idiot at the Ramp Today

My biggest laugh came a few weeks ago. I live on a dead end street that has been marked as an access point for our lake, one of 3. The 2 others are village owned improved ramps, one has a large parking lot while the other has limited parking.

The one at the end of our road is just a one lane dirt access with no pier, no turn around and NO parking and private homes on both sides of the street. Also the water here is at best only 15-18" deep depending on water levels.

On this afternoon I was watching a ballgame on tv when I see this big quadcab pulling a large 20' glass pro style bass boat come flying down the street headed towards the lake. I commented to the wife "I wonder where he thinks he's going, he'll never get that thing in the water down here!" So I got up to watch.

He drove all the way down to the lake, sat there for about 15-20 minutes and must have realized the situation. There are 10 houses on each side of the street which all have narrow 1 car driveways with enough room for a car or two between the street and the garages. Anyways, they ended up backing almost all the way back out of our street until they reached my neighbors across the street. To which they decided to back into his yard to turn around. Good thing he wasn't home! While they were turning around I did notice the Out-of-State plates on the truck

These people wasted a good half hour, tresspassed on to private property and looked like idiots the whole time.

Yes it was Alum Creek at the ramp north of Cheshire on Africa Rd. My daughter almost got in a fight there too. Some women was using the F word to her small child in front of my daughter and her two year old son. There are some real winners there that's for sure. We just try to get out on the water and stay away from people. It's only 20 minutes from my house, which is the part I really like.

Re: Another Idiot at the Ramp Today

So if I was in a huge hurry to retrieve a boat for important reason, would you let me or want to kick my pants. Asking what they hurry is may be helpfull.

We had the same issue at a ramp. Buddy and I got boat to dock. I ran, got truck, raced past 15 trucks in line. Got boat out. In the process, friend got shoved to the ground by 1 disgruntaled boater and his truck has big dings and a smashed side window from disgruntaled rock throwing. Everyone in line were so angry.

Friends wife was killed in a car accident.

You never know why.

I'm older and wiser, I don't let people get to me like that anymore. I like to watch things play out and sorta just go with flow, it seems to always be the 25-35 yr old age group that get into fights over stupid crap.

Sorry to hear of the loss but under those circumstances I believe if it were me the boat would have been left behind as was the case when I suffered a heart attach a number of years ago and a whole campsite was left behind 200 miles from home!

Or perhaps they should be telling (without having to be asked) what the hurry is as they are the one perceived as in violation of etiquette. Why let those being infracted upon even get to the point of rage where they have to inquire.

I would venture a guess that there is a valid reason for next to zero of the instances.

Re: Another Idiot at the Ramp Today

I'm older too and I usually don't let stuff like this bother me and I'm trying to be more laid back, but this guy had an attitude like it was his right to get in front of everybody else because his boat was at the dock. He said it when we stood there just staring at him. As I said earlier if had said his wife was ill and he needed to get her and the boat out of the water, I would have said go right ahead.

I'm sure the guy whose wife died had he said my wife was just in a car accident somebody would have volunteered to get his boat out for him while somebody while he went to the hospital.

And I have let people come around me when I'm next in line if their boat is at the dock used for loading and I am getting ready to put my boat in the water.

Like I said in an earlier post Nice people outnumber idiots, but the idiots are more noticeable.

Boy aint that the truth!
I was the idiot at the docks last week, just look at my thread in dockside chat titled, "embarrasing mishap at the docks" I rammed that dock so hard it got everybody's attention, I can imagine what they all were saying about me.

I know what you are saying about the life or death situation and I am agree 100%.
I'm just saying I have seen people be perfectly safe just out of gas with a long way to troll back to the ramp.
I know it has happened to me before and I was thankful for the tow. My Grandfather always told us that you have to be carefull who's toes you step on they may be connected to the *** you have to kiss later on.:D

Alum Creek is a gorgeous lake and I still go there quite a bit. It's unfortunate that the number of numbskulls out there seems to be on the rise.

I'll keep an eye out for ya next time we are out!

Wow, I am surprised at the number of people who agreed with that jerks actions. Get in line like the rest of us, I am not gonna let him get past me. Some single boaters act a bit too self-righteous.

The ramp rules are posted on a bulletin board next to this particular ramp. It very clearly states your tow vehicle's position determines your place in line.

Last time I was there the presence of the dive team pulling another drowning victim out of the water caused a backup at the ramp. The Division of Watercraft had to step in direct traffic to keep the line-jumpers from creating chaos, rather than using their resources to help locate the victim.

Re: Another Idiot at the Ramp Today

I was at the same ramp again yesterday and looked at that sign making the guy totally wrong. Everything was fine yesterday other than it being so busy. We were actually using the ramp four across for the most part. I thought I would be in line for about an hour when I took the boat out, but it only took about 20 minutes to get down the ramp.

I was backing down next to another boat and the lady getting ready to pull out looked kind of freaked out when she saw me coming down next to her. There was just barely enough room and I would have made it. But I stopped and said I'll just sit here and wait for you to get out before I finish backing down. When she pulled out I finished backing down and the next guy in line came down next to me.
