Hi there, my father in law has a 1990 evinrude 30hp long shaft. Lately, very randomly it has been producing a long whistle/horn sound coming from the box where the shifter is located. (Its not a tiller). Any ideas what it could be? It's not oil injected, it's not losing water pressure, the only warning horns i know of are low oil, or overtemping due to lack of water pressure. All replies are appreciated!!!

Hello:
I own a 1987 30hp long, the only warning horn is a overheating buzzer located in the remote control.
If the 90 rude is anything like the 87(not sure),if you take the cover off,at the rear of the motor(if you are standing looking at it) in the upper left side of motor there is a brown wire with a black rubber boot over it.Pull the boot back (carefully) and disconnect it, ground it to the block, the buzzer should sound in the remote.
Maybe a sticking thermostat

Ok I took alook, and see the brown wire. It connects through a clear connector to another brown wire which then runs to a big boot and bunch of other wires. Can I disconnect the clear connecter and ground it that way, or do I have to pull off the black boot and single out the brown wire?

** Mystery solved...You are correct sir, I got the wire grounded and it sounded the horn, so i guess it was overtemping even though there seemed to be adequate waterflow. Thanks for all the help!!
