1988 bayliner/trophy 85 force outboard

Just put boat back together after repairing lower unit leak, Had some black residue coming out of lower unit... So while i had the lower unit down to check the leak i found the seat around the shaft going into the water pump housing leaking, So i replaced the seal and reinstalled the lower unit.. The clymer manual states to apply rtv silicone to the lower unit and reseal to leg so i did... While the lower unit was off i took carbs off, cleaned resealed and replaced the fuel pump diaphram and inspected the check valves... as per the clymer book did the sync and link adjustment and adjusted the timing to spec.. This was difficult but after 3 attempts i got the idle and wot adjustment working great. So ive been reading posts on here and decided let me add the tell tail and do thermostat, did that as well... so all went great i put the boat in the water this afternoon and it ran great so i took the boat out of the water and brought her home, cleaned the boat and flushed the engine out.. When i park the boat i always put the engine on the lock bar to take the psi off the trim pumps.. well i came out 3 hours later to a small puddle of black residue like i had before i replaced the seal on the lower unit.. Its coming out of the drilled holes under the lower unit wing.. Is this normal or did i Mess something up ... i just want to enjoy the boat at this point for the rest of the year.. What else can i do to make things go smooth. I have to complaints about the force engine but what else can go on me at once..

Sounds like youv'e done a good job.The black stuff is probably unburned fuel/oil.It is gonna happen on any outboard. Park it with the drive all the way down. That's the best way.If it leaks milky colored oil or new looking oil then worry.J

thanks alot jerry for the quick reply ... i hoped it was something simple.. This is my 1st boat im a certified ford tech but I am no means a boat mechanic.. As a car/truck mechanic ive always said its just nuts and bolts well boats are way a bigger deal... the corrosion on nuts and bolts alone and the fight to get it apart it rediculous but when your out on the water and its right omg its just great.. so much fun...

I'm going to second that issue. We have a new (to us) runabout with an 85 HP chrysler and the first tie we took it out your issue didn't happen. We took it out for a longer cruise yesterday and I noticed an oily residue on the prop nose cone. The motor was tilted up from the ride home and I set the motor down when we got home. When I went out to go to work this morning We had the same issue. I stewed about it all day until I had a chance to log on to Iboats forum to search it out. I smelled it when I got home but not much of a smell at all. I'll be picking up an lower unit oil filler this week and draining/replacing the gear lube to verify.

adam i drained my lower unit today which i had just filled when i put the lower unit back together cause it was bothering me about the residue. well the exact amount i put in, came out.. so it must be unburned fuel as previously mentioned ... some of the guys on this site are right on point and i thank those people... taking the boat out tomorrow after work going to run her for a couple of hours i know the idle mixture is alittle fat but ill adjust it later.. i set it at 1 1/8th turn out and it seems really fat... when i took the carbs apart they were only at 3/4 turn but i went by the book so ill adjust later run it first

Being fat will contribute to the dripping.

do u think i should set it back to 3/4 turn i mean the idle mixture is only for idle anyway if im not mistaking as long as its not super leaned out you cant hurt the engine ... to rich foul plugs and smoke. to lean at idle not really going to hurt much you may get a lean pop upon accell but at 3/4 before it was ok maybe ill back it back to 1 turn or 7/8s turn
