Little to no oil in the lower unit after water trip

My motor (1973 115 Evinrude) sounded great, and performed well and all of the sudden I heard this groan. I shut it down and used the trolling motor to get in. I pulled the drain plug and got a little water and a little oil and 1 small metal fragment on the magnet. I filled it with oil and ran it in a drum of water and it sounded fine. I drained the oil again and found a few "filings" but that was all. Would I be safe to fill with oil and keep using it or should it be torn down?

Metal that sticks to the magnet came from the gear/set somewhere. I would not chance it, and tear it down before it shells out completely.

So, if that's the case, is this something I could do myself? or best left to a pro? I'm pretty good with a wrench & a machinist by trade, I've done a lot of different things:D, but there are some things better left to a pro. Would this be one of those situations? or have others done it and found that it's not such a big deal?

If you are good with tools, and mechanically inclined, you can do it yourself with the right must have tool. You must get a OMC manual. I would not get a clymer, or seloc, it must be the real deal. Ebay is a great place to find used and new ones. You may even be able to check one out at your local library.
