Hello,

I'm looking at a 1999 Four Winns Horizon 170 with a Johnson 115. Asking price: CDN$9,500. Comes with Four Winns trailer

My needs: small boat for a 3.5 km2 lake, 2 young children 3 and 5, for family rides and some skiing/tubing. Not looking for huge speed.

Your thoughts? Is this a decent boat?

Thank you.

Yes. I think that boat would suit your needs well.

The price seems a bit high, however, I'm in the US and the boat market is very regional. I have seen very similar boats for sale in the US for less than $5000.

I am very happy with my Four Winns. They are nice, well built boats. I love outboards also.

The Johnson motor is a good motor. I have never had any problems with the motor itself. I did have to replace the trim motor and trim gauge sending unit over the winter.

Sounds like its just what you need and that it will suite your needs quite well.

Not sure on price, but it seems that a boat like that would fetch 6500.00 or so here in Michigan. Just go over it real good and make sure everything works, etc...Take it for a water test with 3-4 people in it just to see how much room there is and how it performs.

Paying for a professional to do a pre-purchase inspection is never a bad idea. And anything found wrong helps in negotiating the price. If nothing is found wrong it provides peace of mind. If too much is found wrong and you don't buy the boat the money is probably some of the best spent money you ever spent.

Those are great boats. Look for signs of gelcoat cracking around the windshield and rub rail near the helm. They can flex too much there if they are pushed to hard in choppy water.

Assuming it's in great condition, that's about a $6500-$7000 (US) boat here in the north east US.

I know you are not loking for speed, but you'll find it quite snappy with that 115 on the transom. It'll jump on plane in it's own length with that motor.
