I have a 1987 18ft bayliner capri with an omc 3.0 and an omc cobra outdrive
i have broke the distributor gear 2 times and what has happend is the altenator was bad both times without knowing about it but i took it out ran it and it starts slowing down then pow it backfired then wont crank back up (out of timming due to dizzy gear) replaced the distributor put the electronic conversion on it timed it and fired up great ran perfect then same thing happend again busted the gear. Now i dont know if its the battery dieing and killing spark then back lashing or if its oil pressure related and also was wondering where i can buy another distributor gear. What do you all think any info would be appreciated thanks for the help.

How is the gear breaking. Is it striping the teeth off it or is the shaft breaking.

The gear is going from regular teeth to very thin sharp pointed teeth also two or so are breaking off.

The gear will do this over time, it is designed to fail instead of the cam gear. But if it is happening really fast as you suggest, you have an issue with how the cam gear and distributor gear are aligning. one issue could be the cam is walking, this means that it is loose due to warn seals and is moving foward and backwards or side to side as the engine runs. Another issue could be lack of lube to the two gears, some are lubed from just splashing oil in the pan and others have a drain hole in the number 1 lifter compartment that allows oil to drain on to the gears as it falls back into the pan. I am not sure how the 3.0L is. It could also be the gear is not installed in the proper location on the distributor.

It could possible be timing as well.

you can buy just a new gear for them but make sure you install them with the proper cleance according to the manual.

Good luck

Just google it it should pop up with a dozen places. ebasicpower.com should have them.

I just had to get a new one for my 3.7L and was able to pick it up at a local marine scrap yard for 1/2 price so that is always a rought if you have one around.
