took 1968 Whaler out first time last week. It has Johnson Seahorse and the old fashioned cable/pulley steering. Problem is, turn the wheel left and boat goes right, turn wheel right . . boat goes left. I know it's got to be a simple fix like reverse the cable wind on the steering wheel? But i could be wrong, any help appreciated.

Re: wrong way steering

Assuming the tiller attachment is on the front of the motor, the cables come off the TOP of the helm drum. On motors that are steered by a bar on the back of the motor, the cables come off the BOTTOM of the drum.

Yes, I know one comes off the top and one off the bottom. The one going to the starboard (right) side of the motor comes off the top. The one that crosses over and goes to the port (left) side also comes off the top, but continues around another half turn to go down the same side of the boat.

Re: wrong way steering

Years ago, I had to grease the steering pivot on my friend's old Merc 850. To do this we had to take the motor completely apart, and work around the rusted bolts. After we got it back together and installed, we took the boat out. it was the first trip of the season, and I did not know the steering drum was replaced as well, over the off season.

To make a long story short...the boat steered backward and shifted backward, however, we used it all day and went waterskiing. It took mental concentration not to turn the wrong way or shift into the wrong gear. Pull that throttle back to go faster in forward, turn the wheel left, to go right..
