hello guys this is my first post and i really need some help as i got a little problem ok here we go i got a 1989 ciation 19 ft with 4.3 cobra engine and my left side is overheating . it melted the rubber boot on exhaust a little bit and the flap inside compression is good on all cylinders and no water in oil or smoking going on . i put clear hoses off of the thermo housing to the head and the right side is flowing great and left side almost nothing if i put it in the water and give it some gas water does go to the left side but it stays in the tube like it cant go thru the exhaust or something any ideas ?? is has always been fresh water boat and fresh water intake also i just replaced impeller

pull that exhaust log off and check it to see if its corroded and clogged same thind happened to me last summer ended up replacing both manifols and risers all were bad

Howdy,

If you have old manifolds on your engine, you NEED to remove them and check them for corrosion that could be blocking water flow.

Also, if you're using the original manifolds, and they are in fact blocked by corrosion, you should probably consider replacing them.

Those type of combined (bat-wing) riser-manifolds have a history of a failure mode that will severely damage an engine if you don't detect the failure right away.

Good luck,

how do i test them ? i did pull them off after the first time it got a little hot i never let it completly overheated but the fact of no water going into the left side melted the flapper off in the exhaust tube i also took the thermo housing off and there was corrosion is the mani and thermo housing . Is there any way to clean them out or fix this without spending 1200 for manifolds

Actually, no.

You cannot safely "clean" the manifolds.

The corrosion in the manifolds IS the metal that blocks raw water from getting into the engine via open exhaust valves.

When that metal becomes thin enough, the walls will break through and you'll have water in the engine. It won't happen all at once.....

If you're lucky, you will catch it when it happens....

If you're not lucky, you catch it when you try to "summerize" your engine and you find that it's frozen solid with rust in the cylinders that had open exhaust valves.

You MUST replace the manifolds. (or you will be replacing the manifolds and the engine)

Cheers,

Re: Please help overheating

ok i took them off and the ports where the water comes out was rusted shut but it wasnt really bad i used a feeler gauge and some rust remover and worked the ports open again but before i did this a mech insisted that it was the head gasket but i checked all compression and was even i will let you know if this fixes the problem but if not do you have any other guesses? im not going to leave the manifolds on there but i wanted to clean and see if thats the problem i will get new ones but im not spending 1200 on something that isnt the problem
