I have a few nuts and bolts that need to be torqued down 800-1200ft pounds, and my torque wrench does up to 600 ft pounds I believe.
What is this torque wrench multiplier???
Do they work well or are they a waste of time and money????
thanks
Rob

Ok, my only question is.....

What that heck are you tightening to 800-1200 foot pounds!!!

My torque wrench only goes to 80 foot pounds.

a torque multiplier is very handy for big jobs and they are accurate. you might be able rent one from a rental store.

Yes they do work and are a must for working on heavy equipment. But they are pricey. Snap-on has them for about $700, Mac is a bit cheaper and Northern tool is about 1/2 that. But if it's something you'll need more than once or twice it may be worth it. Not sure if you can rent them from somewhere.

Just remember a torque multiplier is only as accurate as the torque wrench that your multiplying. We use them all the time at work and is worth the extra expense to get a good one if you are going to use it often.

To add to what puddle jumper said, the handle on the multiplier is for holding the tool while you pull the wrench. Nice bonus with Snap-on and Mac tools is they warranty everything, and will calibrate your wrenches when needed.

Wow, those babies are not meant to come loose...and the wrench that goes on the nuts must be a pretty serious piece of gear.

In nice round numbers, if you are 200# yourself, you need a 4-6 foot extension on that wrench and all your weight to get that torque.

That's why you use torque multipliers. Same reason your car has more torque at the rear wheels in 1st gear than it does in 4th gear. Also 1200 ft-lb torque wrenches are pricey, 500 ft-lb are much cheaper!

For example, using a 4X torque multiplier means that your 200# guy will need a 1.5' handle on the torque wrench. He exerts 300 ft-lbs of torque at the torque wrench (feet off the ground on a 1.5' handle), the 4X multiplier delivers 1200 ft-lb to the socket.

The trade off is that since the socket has 4 times the torque of the torque wrench, it will only rotate at 1/4 the speed of the torque wrench. Not usually a factor when you're just trying to break a nut or bolt loose or tighten it to final torque.

They work- the axles on a Bobcat skidloader torque to a hundred bazillion foot pounds and I used to make fun of the guys in the shop pulling on those things until their eyes almost popped out.

ATV with a chain hooked to the axle, run chain over 1" (or whatever size you're using) socket drive handle, put ATV in 4x4 low, pull on chain which will pull on drive handle to turn the nut or bolt and tighten it down. You must weld a ring of rebar to the end of the drive handle first to loop the chain through, if not the chain will slip off the drive handle and give you a nasty reminder. It'll get good and snug, exact, no, but thing about trying to drag 1,000 lbs of moose with the atv in 4x4 low range; that'll give you an idea of how hard to tug on the chain.

Get chain tight and then give 'er gas, don't get a running start at it with a slack chain :(

Re: Torque wrench multiplier?????

We had a 3" diameter bolt gall and seize on a rocket test motor a while back when it was about halfway out. Had to get it out. We ended up with a 20 foot piece of pipe with 6 big guys on the far end for a cheater bar. Broke numerous breaker bars before we finally welded up something strong enough to take it. Had well over 24,000 ft-lb on the thing before it finally barely came out VERRYYY slowly!
