Hey guys

I noticed on my Tohatsu 3.5HP,in neutral when the prop spins it makes no noise.
But when I put it into gear it makes a strange noise when I turn it by hand.

I don't think its noticable when I tested it in a test barrel, but then again I had the exhaust in my ear too. Heres a video.

Thanks,
DamianJP

PS: Yes I was calling it a Nissan before I found out it was a Tohatsu, I guess it really doesn't matter to much though.

Re: Tohatsu 3.5HP L/U sound Question

Is it supposed to make that sound only when in gear?

It kind of sounds like the rubber impeller but wouldn't it make that sound in both neutral/ingear?

EDIT: I'm am sorry for wasting time/space on the board. I think it is the rubber impeller and the reason im hearing it only in gear is because when in neutral, the L/U shaft isn't hooked up to move the drive shaft. I bet if I put it in neutral and moved the flywheel by hand,I would hear that noise too. I 'feel' dumb right now

Thanks,
DamianJP

That's an atypical squeak. Normally you wouldn't hear anything that loud. But, your probably correct that it is the impeller. I think I would put a new water pump kit into it.

Hey Guru

Thanks for getting back to me quick. A water pump job is easier than digging in the L/U (well for me atleast). Also I see this kit on internetoutboards.com...

I see no housing. Is it common to replace the housing too when you do everything else?

Thanks again,

On Jap engines you don't normally replace the housing. The housing has an insert liner and the kit comes with a replacement insert.
