I have a 1968 33hp evinrude and i bought it a few years a go and have never had it running smooth. I have taken the foot apart and fixed a few parts on it but after putting it back together we started it and it will not pump water or spit water. We checked to make sure that the holes where clear. The motor runs but back fires out of somewhere below the water. We have the water level high. We also replaced the impeller. any ideas?

Re: pump problems?

Was it pumping water before you started working on it? It could be a pinched water tube grommet (#2).
If it were mine, I would replace the entire water pump assembly.

edit: Also, make sure the water tube is aligned properly when re-attaching gear case.

Re: pump problems?

i opened it back up and found that the impeller was not in correctly. one of the blades was facing the wrong way. I switched it and it pumps great. Finally have a great running motor.
