1958 35 hp johnson. got electricity at ignition and at box on transom but nothing when try electric start . Cleaned all contacts. So I resorted to pulling. Does this motor need electricity to make fuel pump work cause no fuel at plugs. It did fire but is dry. It feels as though there is plenty of compression as I am beat tired from several pulls so that is encouraging and it fired fumes but I need help solving both issues Por favor/

if you squeezed the ball and are not getting fuel to the cyl.you must have a blockage ,or a stuck float in carb, the fuelpump should allow enough to fill the carb with a squeeze on the ball, the pump works by a pulse from the crankcase ,not elec,if the choke is not pulling fuel from the carb,Id bet the carb is having issues

How do you know there is no fuel at plugs? Are you expecting them to be wet? If they were wet it would indicate that it was severely flooded. You say it is firing fumes. I don't exactly know what that means.

No it doesn't need electricity for the fuel pump. Does it even have a fuel pump? Some did and some didn't. The ones without a fuel pump had a pressurized tank. Either way, the carburetor is filled by priming with either a squeeze bulb or a button on a pressure tank. That is all it needs in order to start. The fuel pump or pressure system takes over only after it is running.

You probably should be focusing your attention on the ignition system. Do you have 1/4" spark? Don't be giving yourself a heart attack pulling on that thing. If it isn't running after 4 or 5 pulls, there is something wrong.

Re: no fuel to plugs

I was getting back to your response. Thanks admiral, I got carried away pulling like it was a weed eater and tuckered me out. Anyway I rembered something from the past about simplicity and I rapped on the soloenoid with the butt of a screwdriver then tried and it fired right up. After several times starting and running in a barrel it seems to be running fine but it requires choke once then it starts and runs.I thought if you choked and pulled the plugs would flood but they didn't . Thats why I said if fired on fumes.I am working on the throttle cable controls now as it won't move to the fast position (the control lever) Thanks again for your input.
