I'm trying to help a friend out and get him running before the weekend. I've taken all bolts out of the lower unit it dropped down about a inch then no more. Do I have to do something with the shift linkage? I'm thinking thats my culprit.

Re: 70 johnson waterpump

1970...probably has hydro-electric shift....2 electric lines running down into the lower unit...DO NOT CUT THE LINES!!!!!!! under the hood on the Port side
of the motor you should find the 2 electrical lines leading down toward the lower unit...they should be color coded/ different from each other...there is
a quick disconnect for each wire under a sliding protective insulating sleave..
slide the sleave up so the connection can be seen....disconnect by bending the connection...you should be able to see how it works....after disconnecting the wires make sure to attach something....a string/long wire
anything you can use to pull the wires back-up through the hole when you
put the lower unit back on...:D
I have a 1971 60hp 3 cyl Johnson with Hydro-electric shift...thats how mine is....I also had for a short time a 1970 115hp johnson with Hydro-electric shift

Re: 70 johnson waterpump

my guess you are missing the bolt under the trim tab. Also, if I might add to the previous post...I use electrical tape on the shift wires. I unhook them at the knife connectors then wrap about an inch or two down and then give myself a few feet of slack in the electrical tape. I then do a spiral wrap so the sticky part of the tape is now at a minimum. Once you drop the lower unit unwrap shift wires from the tape. You know can use this to pull the wires back up when you are done. I also grease the sheath covering the wires a bit so they pull back up easier.

If it's a 1970 Johnson we need to know the horsepower,

But if it's a 70hp johnson it won't be electric shift. The shift rod disconnects under the bottom carb, a 7/16" hex head screw accessible from the port side.

Another word of caution...If you have the Hydro-electric shift....
only use Type c Premium Blend gear oil
The two electrical wires for shifting ...one is green the other blue
see " hydro-electric shift" ..posted by tashasdaddy,,,
It looks like Hydro-Electric shift was used between 1969 to 1972...
Someone posted that the 40hp Johnson used electric shift though 1970
have fun...let me know how it worked out...what is the hp of your outboard???

Sounds like we might be miscommunicating just a little bit here....

Electric shift was used in 1970 for sure.

I just thought the title, "70 Johnson" might mean "70 HORSEPOWER Johnson" instead of "1970 Johnson".

they scrapped the electric shift concept before introducing a 70HP motor, so all the 70-horse johnsons are mechanical shift.

HP is the more prevalent way to ID an outboard than model year. My guess is that the OP has a 70 HP Johnson that still has the shift linkage connected.

It's the linkage below the carbs, Will the whole linkage rod come out with the lower unit?

Yes it will. Be careful not to rotate the shift rod - it needs to be an exact length to shift properly.

Yes Ray it will. I thought you meant a 70hp when you first posted but you see how much confusion you cost by not being more specific. These guys want year, horse power and model number so they can get right to your problem. Look up under the carbs and there is a 7/16 bolt, take that on the shift rod linkage, you may need a flashlight to see it. I go to the other side of the motor and disconnect the shift rod lever so I can then grab it and move the shifter up and down making it easier to get to when taking out and installing.

Since you're doing this without a manual, I'll just throw in for good measure:
molly lube on the driveshaft splines (but not on top of the driveshaft), and your choice of anti-seize on the lower unit retaining bolts (to prevent corrosion). I like OMC gasket sealant.

Re: 70 johnson waterpump

My next obstacle is a waterpump kit? I keep looking but nla keeps popping up. I know someone has one available. It's 1977 70 hp Johnson seahorse serial # 70el77s. The old waterpump housing has a (blister) about 3/8 of an inch on the housing and the impeller is eat up pretty bad. While I've got it apart might as well be safe and replace the whole thing. water pump kit with housing. Thank you for all the replies and I'll try and be more specific next time.
